[origin: WO2008049817A1] Steam iron (1) having a water tank (2) which can be hydraulically connected to a steam chamber (6) via a preliminary chamber (16), wherein the preliminary chamber has an inlet opening (22), which is connected to the water tank, and an outlet opening (24) which is connected to the steam chamber; a drip-protection valve (26) for opening and closing the inlet opening; a displaceable control rod (28), which extends within the preliminary chamber through a hermetically sealed preliminary-chamber passage opening (46), for adjusting the quantity of water which flows out of the preliminary chamber (16), through the outlet opening (24), to the steam chamber (6) when the control rod (28) is at least in a first position (P1a, P1b). The displaceable control rod (28) has a rod-bypass section (30) which, when the rod is in a second position (P2a, P2b), opens the hermetically sealed preliminary-chamber passage opening (46) and permits water to flow from the water tank (2) to the preliminary chamber (16) and from the preliminary chamber, through the outlet opening (24), to the steam chamber (6).
