[origin: WO2008058573A1] A method for detecting and separating impurities in a pneumatically conveyed material stream of raw cotton, in which method the material stream is illuminated in an observation zone with the aid of at least one point light source (3), is characterised in that the beam which is reflected by the impurities as a consequence of illumination is detected by means of at least one receiving device and is converted into a control signal by means of an evaluation unit, and that a separating apparatus which is arranged behind the observation zone in the conveying direction is activated for separating the impurity. The evaluation unit is programmed in such a way that a separating signal is generated only in the case of a directed reflection of predetermined duration and intensity. To this end, a plurality of radiation sources (3) are provided, wherein the material stream is irradiated at an observation instant only by one radiation source (3) or by one group of radiation sources (3).
