[origin: WO2008061707A1] The invention relates to a security element for protecting documents of value which comprises magnetic material. The invention also relates to a document of value, a transfer material and a method for checking such a security element or document of value. Arranged along the security element, for example in one longitudinal direction of the security element, are one or more, at the most 5, magnetic areas and one or more, at most 5, gap areas. The extent of the magnetic areas or the gap areas along the security element is preferably chosen to be of such a magnitude that the magnetic signals from adjacent magnetization stages which arise when the security element is transported past the magnetic sensor interfere constructively with one another.
