[origin: WO2008061729A1] The invention relates to a security element for protecting documents of value which comprises magnetic material. Arranged on the security element is an extract from a magnetic code which comprises a plurality of magnetic areas and a plurality of gap areas. The extract from the magnetic code is arranged in a prescribed direction along the security element, for example at right angles to a direction of transport for the security element or document of value through a magnetic sensor. For the length of the magnetic areas and the gap areas in the magnetic code, certain length conditions are prescribed which are chosen on the basis of the magnetic sensor used.
