[origin: EP2104403A1] The ballast has a converter with switching elements (S1, S2), whose switching operations are changed for generating voltage that alternates in its polarity at a lamp (LP) i.e. high pressure discharge lamp. The ballast is designed such that a transfer of energy stored in capacitive elements (C1-C3) is caused into an inductive element (L1) during a change of polarity by a steady switching condition of the switch elements. An increased voltage for the supply of a transition voltage is produced at the lamp by the energy under the avoidance of a resonance by the capacitive elements. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electronic ballast.
