[origin: WO2008065081A2] The invention relates to a free-piston engine that is connected to a pre-compressor (14) and a turbine (16). The aim of the invention is to provide an engine of the above type that is compact and light-weight, has a low specific fuel consumption, consists of only few components, has a long service life and is substantially oil- and maintenance-free. For this purpose, the free-piston engine (18) has at least one piston (20) that can be reciprocated in a cylinder compartment and divides the same up into two combustion chambers (36, 38), the pre-compressor being operable electrically and/or assisted by exhaust gas.
