[origin: EP2107147A1] The device has thread guides (12, 13) i.e. thread eyes, driven with a predetermined frequency in an oscillating manner, and a deflection device (19) fixable relative to the thread guides. The deflection device for needle threads (6) is arranged in a region of the thread guides, and has deflectors (22) arranged in front of and after the guides in a conveying direction of the needle threads to a needle (5), respectively. The guides are movable along a movement path, which crosses an imaginary plane (23) fixed between the deflectors. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a backstitch sewing machine.
