[origin: EP2119825A1] The calender has an extended nip (2) provided between pressing surfaces (3,4). A heating device (5) heats a paper or cardboard web (1) for smoothing under application of pressure and temperature. The pressing surface (3) is formed by a pressure shoe (6) with a rotary continuous belt (7). The belt has a basic belt part that is provided with a soft outer coating whose material thickness lies in the range of 0.1.-2 millimeters and surface hardness is of 60-98 shore D. The heating device heats the coating provided in front of the nip for forming a warm outer skin of the belt.
