Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2008090003A1] The invention relates to a bipolar instrument and method for endoscopic controlled shortening and/or fragmentation of stents arranged in the gastrointestinal tract in the tracheobronchial system or in other hollow organs. The instrument comprises an electrode device arranged at a distal end of the instrument with at least one first electrode and a second electrode for conducting a current from a power source through at least one wire of the stent and/or to form an electric arc between the first electrode and the at least one wire and/or between the first electrode and the second electrode, such that the wire may be separated by heating and fusing, a protective device designed and mechanically connected to the electrode device such that the wire may be separated or held away from the tissue of the gastrointestinal tract, the tracheobronchial system or other hollow organs during the passing of the current and/or during the formation of an electric arc. Damage to tissue directly adjacent to the point of application and also in tissue at a distance therefrom can mostly be avoided by means of said instrument (and said method), the modification to the stent being able to be carried out as simply as possible and without risk to the patient.
