Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2008145469A1] In prior art, a signal line between an engine control device and a control unit of an electric component is connected to ground in order to transmit a fault. However, prior art does not suggest transmitting current statuses or a fault diagnosis via the signal line. According to the invention, the duration of the connection to ground of the signal line to the engine control device is used for identifying the fault and can simultaneously be used for indicating a current value of the electric component. The faults are subdivided into groups (7, 12, 14) of different faults (8-11, 15-18) according to the seriousness of the faults such that the more serious the fault is, the longer the connection to ground remains established. This makes it possible to diagnose a fault and indicate a current status with minimal additional effort.
