Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2448928A] A power transmission system for use with downhole equipment in a borehole permits the use of switched reluctance motors for driving electric submersible pumps. The system comprises a power source 10 and converter 12 positioned at the surface providing a DC power supply, preferably at medium voltage, and a downhole DC/DC converter 16, connected to the power source 10 by a two-conductor cable 14, which is thinner and lighter than the conventional AC three phase cable. The converter 16 preferably outputs a lower voltage than the medium voltage. The switched reluctance motor allows more accurate start-up control and reverse operation for cleaning. When not in use, the motor may continue rotating at very low speed and its power consumption may be used to determine the viscosity of the well fluid.
