[origin: CA2687783A1] The invention relates to a multi-layered data storage medium (100) compri sing a substrate (10) on which a security element (30) with a metal layer (3 2) is formed, said element having an optical effect from an observation side . Cavities (50) that have a characteristic (60) are introduced into the meta l layer (32) and are not visible or are extremely difficult to recognise in daylight to the naked eye. The presence of the characteristic (60) can be re cognised at an appropriate angle and under suitable lighting. Preferably, a fluorescent layer (20) is provided under the metal layer (32), said fluoresc ent layer allowing the characteristic (60) to be visible under lighting with UV-light.
