[origin: WO2008148521A1] The invention relates to a device for paying at least partially a prescribed billed amount with value documents, having a checking device for checking the authenticity and value of value documents inserted into the device, a storage device comprising at least two compartments for storing at least two different types of value documents, so that a value document of each of the two types can be dispensed freely and selectably from the storage device, regardless of the sequence of insertion of value documents into the storage device, an intermediate storage device for the intermediate storage of at least two checked value documents, and a control device controlling the intermediate storage device as a function of signals from the checking device rendering the authenticity and the value of the accepted value documents such that the accepted value documents are intermediately stored in the intermediate storage device after checking them according to prescribed criteria for authenticity and value thereof, determining the types and numbers of value documents to be returned at least as a function of the prescribed billed amount and the value of the value documents recognized as authentic, controlling the storage device such that at least the corresponding value documents are dispensed from the storage device, and controlling at least the intermediate storage device and the storage device such that after or during dispensing the accepted, intermediately stored value documents are stored in the storage device and/or a final storage device.
