[origin: WO2009009809A1] A method for the heat treatment of a metal band (2) prior to a metal coating step is described, wherein first the metal band (2) is heated in a directly fired furnace part (3) with the help of hot flue gases and subsequently is tempered in a furnace section (4) having at least one muffle (5) in a reducing shielding gas atmosphere. In order to be able to advantageously use the thermal energy of the flue gases, it is proposed to heat the muffle (5) with the help of the flue gases from the directly fired furnace part (3).
