[origin: WO2009003827A1] The invention relates to a method and a control appliance for triggering passenger protection means for a vehicle. A feature vector comprising at least two features is determined and the two features are derived from at least one signal supplied by a collision sensor system. The feature vector is classed according to a comparison with at least one category limit. The passenger protection means are triggered on the basis of the classification. A confidence level is determined according to a position of the at least one feature vector in relation to the at least one category limit. The passenger protection means are triggered according to said confidence level.
