[origin: WO2009012800A1] The invention relates, inter alia, to a protective device (40-47) for protecting an electrical conductor, hereinafter referred to as the dedicated conductor, associated with the protective device, of an energy supply system (20), having a primary protection function whereby in the event of a malfunction in the dedicated conductor it quickly produces a primary trigger signal in order to switch off the conductor, if prespecified primary protection triggering conditions are met. According to the invention, the protective device incorporates a communication unit (70) for communicating with directly or indirectly neighboring protective devices, as well as a control unit (72) connected to the communication unit, the control unit being so designed as to provide a back-up protection function using the transmitted current measuring values (11-14) of neighboring protective devices, under application of Kirchhoff's law, to check whether a malfunction has occurred within one or more secondary protection zones (50) defined by the neighboring protective devices, and the control unit can generate a back-up triggering signal in order to switch off the dedicated conductor if a malfunction has occurred within one of these secondary protection zones.
