[origin: WO2009009817A1] The invention relates to a shaft furnace suitable for thermally expanding particles of a bulk material, wherein the heating is provided by one or more heat sources arranged on the peripheral surface of the furnace. The furnace interior is directly exposed to the heat source used as the thermal radiation source (3). In a preferred embodiment of said furnace, the horizontal cross-sectional surface of the interior (1) of the shaft furnace is strip-shaped, the elongate length of said strip being many times greater than its width.
