[origin: EP2199017A1] The grinding unit (1) has a machine bed (2) including a workpiece support surface (10), and a machine upper part (3) connected with the machine bed. The upper part is movable in a direction perpendicular to the support surface. A drive unit (4) i.e. electric motor, is fastened to the machine bed and drives grinding parts i.e. continuous belt grinding parts (21, 22), connected with the upper part. The upper part is fixed with respect to the machine bed using a clamping device. The upper part is guided relative to the machine bed in a linear guide. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a grinding unit.
