[origin: WO2009062458A1] The invention relates to a method for operation of a navigation device for detection of a route profile for a vehicle, in particular a navigation device for a motor vehicle, having at least one memory means which is also used to store data for a digital map (1) and for storage of map sections (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) identified by means of polygons, having position signal reception means, in particular for GPS signals, having a position finding device for determining a position from the received position signals, having input means (9, 10) which are also used to select a route profile calculation method, and having a processor device for determination of the route profile taking account of the map data (1) and using a route calculation algorithm, having the following method steps: a) autonomous determination of the route profile calculation method taking account of the selection made by means of the input means (9, 10); b) autonomous determination of map section parameters taking account of at least one map section (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) identified by means of at least one polygon; c) autonomous determination of the route profile by means of the route calculation algorithm on the basis of the determined route profile calculation method and taking account of the map section parameters.
