[origin: EP2214187A2] The device (11) has an operating element (14) arranged on an operating panel (12), and a controller (32) arranged behind the panel. The operating element is mounted in a recess (17) that is arranged behind the panel. A touch switch (36) is connected with the controller. A retracting device (18) retracts the operating element by pressing in the recess. The retracting device retracts a rotary locking handle (15) in a retractable-position. The touch switch is deactivated by the controller in the retractable position. A telescopic pipe (20) is made of plastic. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an operating device.
