[origin: WO2009049345A1] The invention relates to an apparatus for starting avalanches in a controlled manner. In said apparatus, a liftable plate (5, 14, 28, 43, 53, 83) that can be swiveled upward by means of a lifting mechanism (6, 15, 29, 45, 55) is pivotally mounted on a base plate (1, 10, 25, 40, 51, 80) which lies on the ground (2, 12, 26, 81). In order to increase the initial weight of the avalanche and thus the reliability with which the apparatus starts the avalanche, the swivel pin (4, 13, 27, 42) between the two plates (1, 10, 25, 40, 51, 80; 5, 14, 28, 43, 53, 83) is arranged on the mountain side, a device being provided for initiating an impact-type downward swiveling movement of the liftable plate (5, 14, 28, 43, 53, 83) that is swiveled up.
