[origin: WO2009089827A1] The invention relates to a method and to an associated device for operating a heat exchanger system for a motor vehicle. According to the invention, during the warm-up phase of the internal combustion engine and upon exceeding a maximum permissible coolant temperature the cooling medium present in the waste gas heat exchanger is displaced by a gas current from the waste gas heat exchanger, and that the gas remains in the waste gas heat exchanger during the warm-up phase until the light-off temperature of the catalyst has been reached and if the maximum permissible coolant temperature is exceeded until a permissible coolant temperature has been reached. After the light-off temperature of the catalyst has been reached, or after the maximum permissible coolant temperature is no longer met, the waste gas heat exchanger is vented and thereafter a cooling medium that is heated in the indirect heat exchange with the waste gases of the internal combustion engine is supplied to the waste gas heat exchanger.
