[origin: WO2008122133A1] The aim of the invention is to produce a workpiece (10) with a hydrophilic surface (9), the degree of hydrophilic behaviour of said surface being selectable. To achieve this, at least some sections of the surface of a substrate material (1) are provided with a microstructure (2, 3) by mechanical embossing and are then coated and a nanostructure (5), which is overlaid on the microstructure (2, 3), is created by means of a plasma treatment consisting of at least two stages. A protective layer (6) containing hydrocarbons and/or at least one cover layer (7) is deposited over the nanostructure (5), the desired hydrophilic characteristics occurring on the surface (9) of said layer. This targeted overlaying of different structures allows the specific creation of surfaces with the desired degree of wettability.
