[origin: WO2009097922A1] The invention relates to a method for monitoring at least one glow plug (100) of an internal combustion engine, wherein a time-dependent variable that is characteristic of the current flowing through at least one glow plug (100) is compared to at least one time-dependent minimum (Rmin) and/or maximum threshold value (Rmax) for error detection and an error is identified if the time-dependent variable is greater and/or less then the minimum (Rmin) and/or maximum (Rmax) threshold value. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the first derivative of the time-dependent variable is compared with the first derivative of the maximum threshold value (formula I) and the second derivative of the time-dependent variable is compared with the second derivative of the maximum threshold value (formula II). An error is identified if the first derivative of the time-dependent variable is less than the first derivative of the maximum threshold value (formula I) and the second derivative of the time-dependent variable is less than the second derivative of the maximum threshold value (formula II).
