[origin: EP2243599A2] The method involves establishing an operating mode during a predetermined duration, where a drive shaft (5) is rotated in a low speed range during the duration. A determination is made whether an impact spanner (1) applies an impact. The spanner is switched into the mode for a soft substrate, in which speed of the shaft is maintained in the low speed range if the impact does not occur in the range. The spanner is switched into the mode for a hard substrate, in which the speed of the shaft is increased to a high speed range if the impact begins in the low speed range.
