[origin: WO2009095115A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a starter device (10), comprising a thrust device (16) for pre-thrusting a drive pinion (22), with a pusher means (168), coupled to the drive pinion (22) by means of gearbox elements (187, 190, 197, 193, 200, 137), wherein the pusher means (168) moves between an idle position and an end position. In a first step (S1), the thrust device (16) is switched on and then the pusher means (168) is moved into a defined intermediate position between the idle position and the end position. Starter device (10) for internal combustion engines, comprising a thrust device (16) for pre-thrusting a drive pinion (22), with a pusher means (168), coupled to the drive pinion (22) by means of gearbox elements (187, 190, 197, 193, 200, 137), wherein the pusher means (168) moves between an idle position and an end position, wherein the thrust device (16) comprises a switchable magnetic path, which, in a position closed by the pusher means (168), defines an intermediate position for the pusher means (168) between an idle position and an end position.
