Abstract (en)

This invention relates to ballast circuits for lighting circuits, such as LED circuits, which can be directly driven from a mains voltage or other, off-grid, AC voltage sources. The ballast circuit comprises a SMPS without any electrolytic capacitor. The SMPS can operate to provide an unregulated voltage. By not including an electrolytic capacitor, the cost, bulk, and life-time limitations associated with such a capacitor are avoided.
