[origin: EP2261161A1] In an elevator apparatus, a car is suspended by suspension means on one side of a drive sheave. A counterweight is suspended by the suspension means on the other side of the drive sheave. A safety device, which is engaged with car guide rails to cause the car to make an emergency stop, is mounted to the car. For conducting a test for verifying actuation of the safety device, a retention force application device applies a retention force less than an unbalanced load of the car and the counterweight to the suspension means on a counterweight side of the drive sheave.
