[origin: WO2009135762A1] The invention relates to an electric machine having a housing and at least one electric assembly comprising a rotor in said housing, in addition to a cooling unit with a sump pan for coolant, located or constructed in the lower region of the housing. According to the invention, the cooling unit (10) also has at least one coolant spray unit (18) for spraying the electric sub-assembly (3) with coolant (9). The sump pan (8) has a coolant outlet (21) which conducts the coolant (9) into a coolant reservoir (12) when the electric machine (1) is non-operational and is dimensioned in such a way that when the electric machine (1) is operating with a predetermined coolant volumetric flow for the coolant spray unit (18), a coolant level (27) that lubricates the rotor (3) is set in the sump pan (8). The invention also relates to a corresponding method.
