[origin: WO2009146893A1] The invention relates to an illumination and display device having a display comprising a first light emission surface (2) and a lighting element having a second light emission surface (4). The first light emission surface (2) is smaller than the second light emission surface (4) and disposed in a center region relative to the outer border (6) of the second light emission surface (4). The illumination and display device may be operated in an "illumination mode" and a "display mode". In the illumination mode, light for illumination may be emitted both by way of the light emission surface (4) of the lighting element and also by way of the light emission surface (2) of the display. Due to the relative arrangement of both light emission surfaces (2, 4) described, the light emission surface (2) of the display is equally integrated into the light emission surface (4) of the lighting element such that overall a semi-uniform, and in this regard, enlarged light emission surface is provided for illumination. In this manner the light emission possibilities of the device, and therefore also the lighting possibilities per se are improved. It is further intended that no separate space or special region is required in the illumination mode for the display since the display supplements the lighting element in this mode. Therefore, the device overall is particularly space-saving. Instead of the displays, a projector, such as a video beamer, may also be provided.
