Abstract (en)
[origin: GB2460346A] In a communications network comprising mobile terminals (1, fig. 1) registered with network cores (140), a communications manager (fig. 2) comprising a device data manager (30) and corresponding network data manager (50) prioritises and schedules data packets according to whether or not they originate from Short Message Entities (20), the type of data (eg. contact data), the subscription or tariff paid by the user, or the available capacity of the network. SMS communication is handled differently due to its non-interactive, time-insensitive nature, and so SMS bearers are selected in preference to activated packet bearers for this type of data, which may be generated in response to an event such as a Social Network Service (SNS) alert, address book changes, new emails etc. The Communications Manager sits between mobile and network applications.
