[origin: WO2010010024A1] The invention relates to an elevator system (100) comprising an elevator cabin (5), two vertical lateral guide structures (10), at least one counterweight (18) which can be moved along the guide structures (10) and a drive mechanism of its own at the counterweight (18), wherein the elevator cabin (5) is connected to the counterweight (18) by load-bearing means (19). A flat drive (6) as a drive mechanism of its own is fixed to the counterweight (18), wherein the flat drive (6) preferably comprises a gear rim (7) which engages into a complementary toothing (25) provided in a stationary manner in the elevator system (100). A rotational movement of the gear rim (7) is thus converted into a first vertical movement of the counterweight (18), whereby, as a result of the connection of the elevator cabin (5) to the counterweight (18) by means of the load-bearing means (19), the elevator cabin (5) carries out a second vertical movement which is opposite to the first vertical movement.
