[origin: WO2010000244A1] The invention relates to an actuator that moves a movable part of a piece of furniture relative to a stationary part of the piece of furniture into an open or a closed position by means of a driving device comprising a shape memory element. The driving device is attached to one part of the piece of furniture and rests against the other part of the piece of furniture via a coupling element. The driving device comprises a shortening shape memory element as a driving element, said shape memory element being arranged between the coupling element and a mounting point that is stationary relative to the driving device. The driving device of the actuator according to the invention has at least one shape memory element as a drive unit, each shape memory element being protected against excessive stress caused by malfunctions.
