Abstract (en)

A method and an apparatus are disclosed to predict a traffic jam area and indicate a route for positively avoiding a jam-affected area without repeating the route search upon occurrence of a traffic jam due to an unexpected event. A route is determined to avoid the jam-affected area by executing a step (S40) of acquiring the traffic information including the information on the unexpected event, a traffic jam arrival time prediction step (S42) for predicting, for each mesh, at least one of the starting time and the ending time of the traffic jam caused by the unexpected event, a step (S43) of predicting the time of arrival from the starting place for each mesh around the starting position based on the starting position and the starting time, and a step (S44) of calculating the area affected by the traffic jam before the end of the traffic jam caused by the unexpected event. The traffic jam can thus be avoided positively in the future by setting a route avoiding the jam-affected area thus determined, while at the same time reducing the number of times a route is searched for.
