[origin: WO2010045953A1] The invention relates to a storm drain (gully) and to a method for operating the same, having an upper inlet chamber and a lower outlet chamber separated therefrom by means of an inlet chamber floor, wherein the outlet opening of the inlet chamber is through a pipe or a siphon lying at a significant distance above the inlet chamber floor, and having an outlet pipeline in the outlet chamber that can be closed by means of a float. In order to achieve a significantly improved function and also prevent an overflow, the invention proposes that a bypass (20) is provided through which excess discharge water can flow in case of overload, the upper end thereof opening into the inlet chamber (5) above the outlet opening (8) of the inlet chamber (5), and the lower end (22) thereof opening into the outlet pipeline (12) below the valve (13, 14).
