[origin: WO2010043996A2] An apparatus is arranged to perform contrast enhancement for one or more color images. The apparatus comprises an image source (101) which provides the color image having color values for image areas, where each image area may specifically correspond to a pixel. A contrast enhancement processor (103) performs contrast enhancement on the color image by modifying a luminance characteristic for at least some image areas in response to the color value for the image area. The contrast enhancement processor (103) may specifically generate compensated luminance values for pixels by normalizing luminance values relative to a nominal luminance value for the color of the pixels. A luminance contrast enhancement is then performed on the compensated luminance values. The approach may allow improved image quality and may in particular reduce introduction of unnatural shadowing effects due to color variations.
