[origin: WO2010052513A1] The invention relates to a method for applying at least one strip-shaped element (12), in particular a security thread, onto a ribbon-like substrate (11) in a positionally precise manner, said strip-shaped element (12) having a structure that changes in the longitudinal direction and having control marks (30, 31, 32) for positioning the strip-shaped element (12). A continuous operation "from the roll" with no strain fluctuations is accomplished by providing a supply roll (13) with the strip-shaped element (12) wound thereon, that the ribbon-like substrate (11) is passed by an application location (AO) in the longitudinal direction at a predefined speed, that a position is detected on the ribbon-like substrate (11) for applying the strip-shaped element (12), that according to the detected position on the ribbon-like substrate (11) the strip-shaped element (12) is unwound from the supply coil (13), wherein the control marks (30, 31, 32) of the strip-shaped element (12) are scanned and from the scanned control marks (30, 31, 32) the longitudinal positioning of the strip-shaped element (12) is determined, that a precisely positioned predetermined section is cut from the unwound strip-shaped element (12) and the predetermined section is transferred to the ribbon-like substrate (11) with positional precision and synchronously applied there.
