[origin: WO2010069685A1] A process for providing storable and transportable energy carriers (103, 104) is described. In one step, a transformation of silicon dioxide-containing or metal oxide-containing starting material (101) into silicon (103) or metal takes place in a reduction process (105), with the primary energy for this reduction process (105) being provided from a renewable energy source. Part of the reaction products (102) of the reduction process (105) is then used in a process (106) for producing methanol, with synthesis gas (110) composed of carbon monoxide and hydrogen being used in this process (106) for producing methanol.
