[origin: EP2378001A1] The device has a mast (1) comprising a lower mast part (13) hinged to a carrier device (3) and a mast extension piece (12) for increasing or reducing mast length between the lower mast part and an upper mast part (11). A carriage (6) is displaceably guided along the mast, and a feed rope (8) displaces the carriage that runs sectionally along the mast. A winder accommodates a slack rope that is formed on the feed rope when the mast extension piece is removed from a mast run and the upper mast part is directly fixed on the lower mast part. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a ground working device.
