[origin: EP2381064A2] The device has a rod magazine (20) movable along a rod magazine channel (24) that runs laterally adjacent to a drilling rig (10). A skidding channel is designed as the magazine channel, where the movement of the magazine is synchronized with movement of the rig. A vertical lift has two handles for engagement into the magazine and for accommodating a drilling rod (16). A rod handling device is movable along a handling device channel transverse to the magazine channel. A handling device channel element i.e. rail, is movable with the magazine and designed as a section of the device channel. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a device for handling a drilling rod.
