[origin: US2010198854A1] Methods are provided for searching at least one directory that is external to an address book architecture including a client and a server. In one embodiment a client may communicate a contact search request that specifies an external directory which does not support a standard search format, the request causing the server to translate the request to an external search request in another format supported by the external directory. In another embodiment a server may translate a contact search request received from a client when the request specifies an external directory which does not support a standard search format. In yet another embodiment an interworking function, which is operable to import contact information from a legacy address book storage to a converged address book storage, of an address book server is adapted to query an external directory which does not support a standard search format.
