[origin: WO2010089338A2] The invention relates to a short-circuit protection device (1) for limiting, preferably also deactivating, short-circuit currents in high energy direct current networks (5), in particular short-circuit currents of battery systems in submarine direct current networks, comprising - an electrical resistor (9), in particular an ohmic resistor, to conduct and limit the short-circuit current in the case of a short-circuit, - a first switch (10) connected parallel to the resistor for bridging the resistor (9) when the network (5) is free of short-circuit, - a monitoring and control arrangement (11) for monitoring the current I by the switch (10) and for opening the switch (10) if the current I through the switch (10) exceeds a specified threshold value.
