[origin: EP2402484A1] Producing a protective layer with a gray tint on rolled flat products made of titanium-zinc alloy or its derived products comprises treating the product with an acidic aqueous coating solution, where the treatment solution, which is prepared in 1000 cm 3>of water, comprises (in g) phosphoric acid (20-50), saturated oxalic acid and/or malonic acid (20-50), ammonium nitrate (2-5), copper containing compounds (0.1-5), which form cuprous or cupric ions in the treatment solution. An independent claim is also included for flat-rolled semi-finished products of titanium-zinc alloy with the protective layer with a gray tint, produced by the above mentioned method.
