[origin: WO2010112303A1] The invention relates to a method and to a device for illuminating an edge region (40) of a road (12) by headlights (14, 30, 32) of a vehicle (10). The vehicle (10) comprises a camera (20). At least one additional lighting unit (30) or a masking (32) of a headlight (14) present on the vehicle (10) is activated. An additional illuminating region (36) is created, extending in the vertical and lateral directions in relation to the vehicle (10). The activation of the at least one additional lighting unit (30) or headlight masking (32) on at least one headlight (14) present on the vehicle (10) is done by a navigation system of the vehicle (10) or by reducing the speed of the vehicle (10) and/or by an object-traffic sign detection using the camera (20).
