[origin: WO2011137943A1] The invention relates to a drive unit for rail vehicles, comprising the following components or features: a shaft (1) which has at each of its two ends a bearing pin for supporting a drive wheel; a supporting pipe (2) which surrounds the shaft (1) and is mounted thereon; a motor which is mounted on the supporting pipe (2); a transmission with a spur gear and a drive pinion (4); a housing which surrounds the spur gear and the drive pinion (4); the housing (3) is composed of a single main part (3.1) and a cover (3.2); the engine is seated on a single bracket (5) which is attached to the supporting pipe (2); the housing has an engine bell (7) which forms a fixed connection between the engine housing and the main part (3.1) of the housing (3); the supporting pipe (2) is cast onto the main part (3.1) of the housing (3) so that these two parts form a rigid unit with one another.
