[origin: WO2010130495A1] The invention relates to a piston engine (1), in particular a liquid piston engine, comprising a plurality of piston units (10, 11, 12) which have different displacement volumes (V10, V11, V12) conditional upon the respective geometry and which can be switched off individually for discretely setting a total displacement volume (VG) of the piston engine (1). To this end, it is provided that the larger displacement volume (V11, V12) of one of the piston units (11, 12) in each case is twice as large as the next smaller displacement volume (V10, V11) of another of the piston units (10, 11).
