[origin: WO2011029812A1] The invention relates to a brake system for motor vehicles that can be actuated in a "brake-by-wire" operating mode both by the vehicle driver and independently of the vehicle driver, and that is operated preferably in the "brake-by-wire" operating mode, and that can be operated in at least one fallback operating mode wherein only operation by the vehicle driver is possible. The brake system comprises an electrohydraulic pressure generating device (5) outputting a brake system pressure, and a pressure modulation unit comprising one inlet value (6a - 6d) and one outlet valve (7a - 7d) per wheel brake (8, 9, 10, 11), tapped from the brake system pressure, wherein the inlet and outlet valves (6a - 6d, 7a - 7d) output or pass along the brake system pressure in the non-actuated state. In order to prevent irritations to the driver of the vehicle, particularly if the electrical on-board network of the motor vehicle fails, according to the invention, circular electrically actuated switching valves (37, 47) are connected between the pressure generating device (5) and the pressure modulation unit, said valve producing a hydraulic connection between the pressure generating device (5) and the pressure modulation unit in an actuated state.
