[origin: GB2473741A] The self-centering cutting head 1 for cutting a coating from a pipe e.g. to leave a predefined thin layer of coating on the pipe, has a pivot mount defining a longitudinal axis 7 and a self-centering element 15 having two pipe-engaging means 17 for abutting the surface of the pipe. The self-centering element is mounted for pivotal movement about the longitudinal axis. A cutting element 19 includes a cutting blade mount 21 for a cutting blade 23. The cutting element is co-pivotal with the self-centering element. The pipe-engaging means may be roller bearings 17. The cutting head may be used in a method of removing a coating on a pipe to retain a predetermined coating depth by moving the pipe along its longitudinal axis.
