[origin: EP2486972A1] An internal combustion engine in which an SO x trap catalyst (13) for trapping SO x contained in the exhaust gas is comprised of an upstream side catalyst (13a) and a downstream side catalyst (13b) into which the exhaust gas flowing out from the upstream side catalyst (13a) flows. The SO x storing material (55, 62) of the upstream side catalyst (13a) is mainly comprised of an alkali earth metal, while the SO x storing material (55, 62) of the downstream side catalyst (13b) is mainly comprised of an alkali metal.
