[origin: WO2011048293A1] The invention relates to a method for detecting mechanical failure in a system (10) for treating nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced by a heat engine, said method comprising: for a reference operating cycle, defining a reference difference (?OBD) between a maximum value (Q0 amont), for the amount of nitrogen oxides produced upstream of the system (10), and a threshold (SOBD) for the amount of nitrogen oxides emitted downstream of the system (10); in an operation phase, calculating an amount (QSCR) of treated nitrogen oxides as the difference between the amount (Qamont) of nitrogen oxides produced and the amount (Qaval) of nitrogen oxides emitted downstream of the system; comparing said amount (Qaval) of nitrogen oxides, emitted downstream of said threshold (SOBD), and the reference difference with the amount (QSCR) of treated nitrogen oxides; and concluding, during a mechanical failure of the treatment system, if both comparisons are simultaneously positive.
